Empathy
Yes. Empathy. Not to be confused with sympathy. Try to see the situation from their perspective - this will make YOU appear more rational, mindful and a more successful negotiator.Check. Your. Intent.
Why are you engaging with this authority figure? Vengeance? Attack? Victory? To humiliate? Be resolution oriented. Win the war - not just the battle.Set the agenda.
- To determine the outcome - to control the narrative and better dictate your terms - you must set the agenda for the dialogue.
- Conflict in and of itself is NOT a great start. What end result do you desire? Create an agenda that gets you there. Use it as your roadmap.
Remove. All. Emotion. & Drama. From the situation.
Remember - You can only control yourself - therefore maintain self-control.Be Direct.
- It is critically important that you state clearly how you feel. Choose your words carefully.
- Try not to be defensive. Try not to get belligerent. Even I struggle with this one.
Remember. You have Power. Use it
We all deserve dignity & fairness. We all have a voice. Don’t be afraid to use yours.
